  • About this painting

In 2018 I painted my original version of a prayer to Saint Joseph in English and in Latin which can be seen on this web site. When Pope Francis in his apostolic letter “Patris Corde MMXXI” (“With a Father’s Heart”) declared 2021 the Year of St. Joseph and with some gentle persuasion from a close friend I decide to modify my original English version to make room for these two prayers that are said daily by Pope Francis.

The two prayers in this manuscript painting are recommended to the faithful by Pope Francis in his apostolic letter “Patris Corde MMXXI” (“With a Father’s Heart”) declaring the Year of St. Joseph. In his letter, Pope Francis notes how, “Every day, for over forty years, following Morning Prayer” he has “recited a prayer to Saint Joseph taken from a nineteenth-century French prayer book of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus and Mary.” At the end of the first prayer he adds a second prayer (Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer……….)

Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossible possible, come to my aid in these times of anguish and difficulty. Take under your protection the serious and troubling situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome. My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is as great as your power. Amen.

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man. Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

  • Symbolism in this Painting

A brief explanation of the symbolism in this painting:

In the bottom corners are Lilly’s, the flower that is said to have blossom from the top of St. Joseph walking staff. Lilly’s are symbol of purity. Daisies, found at the top of the composition are a symbol of the innocence of the Christ Child and they are associated with purity, innocence, loyal love, beauty, patience and simplicity. Violas symbolize the Trinity because of their three-color petals. Violet is a symbol of humility and is associated with Christ on earth as an infant. Strawberries with their white flowers and red fruit, purity and martyrdom. Their threefold leaves reference the Trinity. Pea flowers are associated with the birth of Christ and are symbolically linked to good-bye, departure, and thank you.

The Lion represents strength, majesty, courage, and fortitude. The hare is a symbol of men who put the believe of their salvation in the Christ and His Passion. The butterfly is a symbol for the cycles of life; caterpillar, chrysalis and finally, the butterfly. Birds are the symbol of the “Winged Soul”. They are used to suggest the Spiritual, as opposed to the material. The Bee and Ants that are scattered throughout the composition are used because of their industrious habits, as symbols of activity, diligence, work and good order. The spots of the seven-spot ladybug symbolize Mary’s Seven Joys and Seven Sorrows.
