About this Painting
This painting is inspired by Luke’s Gospel. Chapter 6 verse 31. It instructs us to treat other people the way we would want to be treated. It is often called the “Golden Rule”. In my humble opinion it seems a large percentage of the population today has forgotten this simple commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself”. It boils down to having concern for the well-being of others.
Symbolism in this Painting:
A brief explanation of the symbolism in this painting:
Unlike a lot of my other illuminated manuscripts, I have chosen not you use a lot of historical Christian symbolism. As in all my recent paintings, at the top center of the icon, you see a very faint ancient star map that extends down below the icon and is visible underneath the type. Also at the very top left is a reference to sky and clouds as if the statement is coming down from above. The circle at the top right of the icon contains two painted angels. One of the Angels, Gabriel, is blowing a horn of fire that rains down on the landscape below as a warning to all to pay attention. The Angel in the center of the icon is handing the word of God down to the scribe so that it can be recorded for all to pay attention to this Golden Rule. Flanked on the left side of the center Angel is Luke symbolized by a winged bull. The bull is a symbol of hard work, self-sacrifice, service, and strength. On the right of the center icon is Mark the Evangelist depicted as a winged lion. I use butterflies as a symbol for angels.
Outside the icon bordered on the right and bottom of the icon are a series of winged beasts, monsters and demons. On close inspection, one can see that they are entangled with each other. They are bullying one another. Terrorizing, intimidating each other. They represent a steady stream of fighting, ass biting and snarling at each other. Very similar to what I see currently happening with our polarized society. Just the opposite of the commandment "love your neighbor as yourself”. The capital “E” and “T” also contain similar creatures.
