ANGEL OF GOD,
my guardian dear,
To whom his love commits me here;
Ever this (day, night) be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
About this painting
This is a simple prayer asking the guardian angel for help. To always be by one’s side day, and night, protecting and guarding them, to rule and guide them in to doing what right.
In this painting we see a seated artist depicting the real and spiritual world that surrounds him. There is a guardian angel standing at a door, the gates of Hell, with a key in the lock that locks out the demons below. The demons represent the power of evil and destruction. They also represent the power of evil that man must overcome in himself. The artist has painted a wing, while Angels who are represented by butterflies with open wings incircle him. Wings are the symbol of divine mission.
Symbolism in this Painting
A brief explanation of the symbolism in this painting:
In the border surrounding this composition is a highly stylized acanthus plant. The acanthus name is derived from the Greek “akantha” meaning thorny leaves. The flower bracts of the acanthus plant are said to be able to tear flesh. In Christian art the thorny leaves represent sin, punishment, and pain. Demons representing the power of evil are intwine on this thorny mass. They are also surrounded by flesh tearing thistles the symbol of earthly sin and sorrow.
On the right edge slightly above the middle we see a white lily emerging from behind the akantha vine. Roman legions used they as a cure for cuts, scrapes and wounds. The lily is also a symbol of purity and is the flower of the Virgin. The artist has painted a wing, while Angels who are represented by butterflies with open wings incircle him. Wings are the symbol of divine mission. The butterfly is a symbol for the cycles of life; caterpillar, chrysalis and finally, the butterfly. Birds are the symbol of the “Winged Soul”. They are used to suggest the Spiritual, as opposed to the material. The Bee and Ants that are scattered throughout the composition are used because of their industrious habits, as symbols of activity, diligence, work and good order. The spots of the seven-spot ladybug symbolize Mary’s Seven Joys and Seven Sorrows.
