This manuscript painting is a traditional Catholic prayer recited during Confession and is prayed before going to bed.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
and I detest these and all my sins
because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell.
But most of all, because I have offended Thee
Who art all good and deserving of all my love.

A brief explanation of the symbolism in this painting:
This is a traditional prayer expressing our sorrow for past sins, and declare our hope that God’s grace will triumph within us. Contrition includes the desire to change one’s life and correct the harm caused by one’s misdeeds. We admit how much we despise our sins because we fear that our actions will lead us to face the pain and darkness of hell rather than the light of heaven. We affirm that God’s grace will triumph within us. At the top of the icon you can see a very faint ancient star map. Painted over the star map, in the borders surrounding the cap initial is a highly stylized “acanthus.” Carved patterns of the acanthus plant date back to classical Greek architecture. Legend has it that Callimachus, an Athenian sculptor and architect, adopted the motif after seeing the plant grow out from under a gravestone. The acanthus name is derived from the Greek “akantha” meaning thorny leaves. In Christianity the thorny leaves represent sin, punishment and pain. The strawberries are used to symbolize temptation. The butterfly is a symbol for the cycles of life; caterpillar, chrysalis and finally, the butterfly. This image has light and dark butterflies representing Heaven and Hell. Strawberries are used to symbolize temptation. Bees and ants that are scattered throughout the composition are used because of their industrious habits, as symbols of activity, diligence, work and good order. The spots of the seven-spot ladybug symbolize Mary’s Seven Joys and Seven Sorrows.
